📷☁️ xFab Course Project Showcase12/2023
xFab Lab was a required course in my first year of MFA. In this course, I went on an exploratory journey of handicraft and digital manufacturing. From traditional handicraft to modern technology, every week I learned about a new form of production, its history and culture, and completed a work of art with my own hands. This page records each work I completed, showing the entire process from the source of inspiration to the selection of materials and design, and finally to the finished product. Each small work explores different media and themes, and also reflects my practice and thinking in this course.
Cardboard
This project involves making a small cardboard box man, inspired by the cardboard box man image seen in childhood. Starting with discarded cardboard, it involves hand-carving, cutting, and assembly, and the addition of interesting elements.
Basketry
This project involved weaving a storage basket using rubber bands, inspired by the memories of when I was a child and used to weave bracelets. Compared to traditional weaving methods that require knitting tools, this time I chose to weave by hand using rubber bands, which does not require additional tools and is simple and flexible to operate. The final product was nicknamed “green pineapple” by a friend because of its color and shape, so I named it that.
Plushies
This project is about hand-making a puppy doll out of white fabric, inspired by a puppy doll from my childhood memories. I found an unused pillowcase at home as the main fabric, and disassembled the pillow to remove the cotton as the filling. The entire production process involved drawing a sketch, cutting the fabric, sewing the filling, and embroidering the expression. This was my first attempt at sewing, and although the final product is a bit rough, I am very satisfied with this handmade puppy.
3D Printing + Molding + Casting
This project includes three 3D printed models: a twisted sphere, a hand model, and an ancient Chinese stone lion, which explore the representation of different shapes and materials in the physical world. I used PLA material to ensure hardness and stability, with the twisted sphere and stone lion as decorations, and the hand model planned to be used as a storage container. I then experimented with plaster casting of these 3D printed works to explore the effects of surface texture and support marks. Through the two casting processes, I realized the crucial role of the arrangement of steps and the choice of materials in the casting process on the quality of the final product.
Etching + Engraving
This project involved hand-engraving a stamp with an eraser. From pattern transfer to engraving to final testing, every step made me understand more about the impact of the depth and angle of the engraving on the effect of the stamp. In the future, I plan to try more diverse patterns and styles.
