Introduction

CO-SPACE is a forward-looking design project focusing on the harmonious coexistence of humans and animals in the future city. With the accelerating urbanization process around the world, more and more animals are forced to enter human urban spaces. However, urban space design is more concerned with meeting human needs and ignores the living environment of animals. CO-SPACE aims to create a shared habitat for animals and humans through inclusive design, while protecting the diversity of natural ecosystems. Through innovative product design concepts, the project demonstrates how to meet the habitat needs of animals without affecting the needs of urban space, and to build a future space for multi-species symbiosis.

One of the core outputs of the project design is a seasonal temporary habitat for sparrows. This design structure can be attached to urban buildings and is based on the traditional Chinese tenon and mortise structure, which is both stable and easy to assemble. This is not only a temporary home for birds, but also a symbolic spatial solution for humans to coexist with animals.

Concept

The core concept revolves around the “symbiotic relationship between humans and animals”. In future urban development, the living spaces of humans and animals will inevitably overlap further. CO-SPACE proposes an innovative spatial design concept that not only considers the urban needs of humans, but also provides a habitat for wild animals in the city. The project uses intelligent technology to monitor environmental changes to ensure the balance and sustainability of the symbiosis.

This is not just a design for bird habitats, it symbolizes a new urban ecosystem: a place where humans and animals live together and share the urban space. Through the intelligent and modular product components in the design, the project shows how to incorporate care for the survival needs of animals into the urban structure, enhancing the diversity and inclusiveness of urban space.

Goals

Explore and propose a design method that can solve the problem of animals' living space being occupied, focusing on the following aspects:

- The possibility of humans living together with animals: study how to design urban structures that can meet the spatial needs of animals while not abandoning the need for urban development.

- Innovative spatial design: propose a symbiotic structure that is adaptable and easy to install through a design based on the traditional Chinese mortise and tenon structure, providing temporary or permanent habitats.

- Enhance urban ecological diversity: By providing urban birds (such as sparrows and pigeons) with habitat space, the diversity and natural balance of the urban ecology is promoted.

- Intelligent environmental monitoring (Conceptual): Research how to use sensors and smart devices to monitor the animal habitat environment in real time, optimize the living conditions, and further enhance human-animal interaction and coexistence.

Application Scenarios

CO-SPACE has a promising future in urban life. It is not only an innovative ecological design, but also an integral part of future urban planning that cannot be ignored. The following are some key areas of application of this project:

- Ecological urban planning: The modular design of CO-SPACE can be adapted to various urban spaces, such as building facades, parks and bridges. It provides habitats for animals, enhances the ecological diversity of cities, and improves the sustainability of urban planning, becoming an important part of ecological urban development.

- Symbiotic culture advocacy: As a symbolic design, CO-SPACE gradually changes people's perceptions and shows the inevitability of coexistence between humans and living things. By installing these structures in public places, the public can directly perceive the symbiotic concept of humans and nature, enhance environmental awareness, and promote cultural communication and ecological education.

- Smart urban ecosystem: The integration of smart devices makes CO-SPACE part of the smart city of the future. Temperature and humidity sensors continuously monitor and optimise the living environment of the animals, providing data support for the management and planning of multiple species in the city of the future.

- Public art and interactive installations: In addition to its ecological functions, the design itself can also be used as a public art installation in the city to inspire people to think about ecological balance and nature conservation. The interactive function allows people to interact with the installation, enhancing the fun of urban culture and environmental awareness.
